Service to Your Country

As we look back on the terrorist attack of 9-11 and as we discuss the Civil War, war and volunteering for the military comes to mind. What would cause you to volunteer yourself and join our military (any branch) during a time of war?

  1. I would volunteer myself ONLY to save others lives, but since I have a choice, i won't. i love my life and I wouldnt want to change it at all even if that involves me sacrificing my life for others. I dont think I could do it. The people who do are extremely brave and i honor them, but i cant see myself doing it.

  2. Many people in my family have been either in the navy or the army. And I admire them for serving our country and becoming apart of the millions who sacrafice their lives and help keep our country safe. One thing that would cause me to volunteer myself for the military is to be a nurse for the troops during the war. Actually killing people and putting myself in a direct position where I could be killed is a little too much for me. But there are many needed nurses and doctors in that field so I think I would still be serving our country in that respect.

  3. I would join as a hand combat trainer for all three branches of our military. I have friends in and out of the military. One is going to Afghanistan. One is going to boot camp. Both people are in the Marines.

  4. The only way I would volunteer myself to be in the army is if I was helping the wounded soldiers. Although the thought of sacraficing myself for my country would make me very proud, I could not face death in that way.

  5. the only way i would volunteer myself to join the military would have to be if i truely beleaved that our country was in true danger. Another reason if there were threats twards my family or things like that. I hate the thought of war and violence between peole. But if it came down to having to join the military for rvery very important reasons i would. But if its just a war over something minor you will not see me signing up to fight.

  6. I don't think i would be brave enough to volunteer myself into the army. The only thing i could see myself doing is something involoved with it but not actually fighting. I think the only movitvation for me to join would be if the war had a direct effect on me. I have't had the loss of someone close to me because of war so I don't have the drive to want to join.

  7. Many people in my family has either joined or has already been in the military. I admire them for that. I could not be able to join any kind of military but they are brave enough to fight for our country.

  9. I would voulenteer out of gratitude for my country. Our goverment does so much for us to keep us safe and if you look at our soilders in different countries fighting for what they belive in (freedom) they usually win. I would join so my fellow americans could have safe lives just as the soilders provide me now. That would be why i would join in times of war..

  10. I personally wouldnt want to volunteer myself for the military, but if I absolutely had to I guess I would just to save our country and help the other soilders out. I'm not brave enough to willingly be in any kind of army though. Also I'm not a fan of war, I definately think it's something that can be avoided.

  12. I admit I really admire all the soldiers that have been involved in any war!!! The truth I wouldn't really volunteer myself to join the military during a war. An option for me would probably be just helping in what I can,but not actually fighting.

  13. I don't think I can see myself volunteering to join the military, I respect all the people who have joined to keep me and the rest of the country safe but I would probably volunteer if I felt I was in EXTREME danger.

  14. I couldn't join the army to fight in it. I would join to help out in many other ways such as helping the wounded or hurt spldiers. I have so much respect and consideration for soldiers and what they do for our country. Another reason why I would join is for the schooling help I would love to help our country and beneifit from it.

  15. Although i like my country, I doubt I could find myself in the military during a war. If I did join I would be some sort of technician.

  16. Serving one's country during a time of war presents the possibility of the greatest sacrifice, one's life for the safety of his or her nation and its people. However, it is not something that should be put aside as not possible for any of us. For it is this service that millions have given before us that has allowed all of us to live the way we do, in the country that we do, enjoying the freedoms that we have.

It is important, I think, to understand that millions before us have given the greatest sacrifice, and that one day if you or I are called upon that we should proudly answer that call for service so that others might live in this great country.

I really enjoyed reading the ideas some mentioned about using service to further one's education, serving the country in ways other than the military, and the fact that some are already planning on joining one branch of our military. You are all arguments against those who question your generation!
