War Options in Afghanistan

Read the Associated Press article titled "Obama's Afghan war options run gamut".

After considering our country's options concerning the war in Afghanistan, explain your thoughts as to what action you would like to see happen.

  1. After reading the article and all of the options it provided I came to the conclusion of what I would like to see happen. Scaling back, is my choice because I think the war has gone on for too long ecspecially with the fact that there have been many hidden reasons for the war. The reason for why the war in Afghanistan was started has been changed over time. I think taking a break and having less soldiers on duty for a while will not only save the U.S. money but also save many lives. I think our country tries to play like the hero for other countries when we really need to be focusing on our own debt, among other issues. It takes me back to the thought of Hurricane Katrina and how would could have solved that problem within ourselves but instead we spend our time and money on another country. Who's to say that everything we've worked on wont back fire as soon as our troops leave Afghanistan?

  2. In my opinion i think that we should be scaling back. In doing so, the United States would destroy the most-wanted extremists without ending or injuring American lives. Also scaling back would not hand a victory to the Islams.

  3. I think that the United States should still continue to keep a presence there in Afghanistan. There should be a large withdrawal of troops but keep it reasonable because if the United States takes out too many troops, then Afghanistan may be dangerous once again.

  4. I would choose staying put because the soldiers in Afghanistan can help the Afghanistan sercurity forces to gain confidence in the fight against terrorism. That would make it so we won't have to keep sending more troops it Afghanistan.

  5. I think that the United States should choose the Scaling back option. I don't think we should be sending thousands more troops over to Afghanistan. We should just keep the U.S. special operations forces looking for the most-wanted-extremist, but we should also worry more about the al_Qaida situation.

  6. I think that the United States should be scaling back slowly. We didn't find what we oringinally went over for. I think we should do it gradually, because it would be almost impossible to just pick up and leave in one day.

  7. In my opinion, the United States should choose the option of Scaling back. This would really reduce the deaths of many Americans. Not only that, but if this option was chosen it wouldn't just hand over victory to the Islamic forces. They should just keep things how they are right now for a while, which is to continue their hunt for the most-wanted-extremist leaders in Afghanistan.

  8. I think that the United States should slowly scale back but yet again there are some negative effects that come along with it. Fewer men and women could result to a weaker army and therefore more deaths. Im not saying this is true but could become about.

Eventually we need them OUTTT!! :)

  9. The war in Afghanistan can be very confusing and the solution for the war perhaps even more uncertain. However, I think it is always good to ask the following three questions: Where have you been, where are you now, and where do you want to be? Let’s apply these to the situation in Afghanistan…
WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN? We have been in Afghanistan since 2001. The U.S. invaded the country directly after the attacks of September 11. We went after the terrorist group Al Qaeda and wanted to get rid of the oppressive Taliban government. We got rid of the Taliban government, many of the Al Qaeda leaders, and helped create a new government in the country.
WHERE ARE YOU NOW? We are trying to make the country secure for its citizens. There are Taliban fighters throughout the country fighting, what they think, is a war to save the country from being taken over by America. They recruit and threaten the people of the country daily. Most Afghans are farmers and need to be guaranteed security to go about their daily lives. We are attempting to improve the government, gain the trust of the different Afghan tribes, and encourage them to stay away from the Taliban. This is a very difficult task for American soldiers and many are killed in this completely unique war.
WHERE DO YOU WANT TO BE? We want the country to be able to defend itself from Taliban forces. We want Afghan citizens to be economically successful and we want the government to be functional and trustworthy. In order to do this we must make the country secure and I believe we must therefore increase our troop numbers in the country. If Afghans do not have to worry about security, they can focus on improving their lives and the country. During this process we must then train the Afghan forces and give ourselves the ability to, many years from now, leave the country. Keep in mind, we still have a military presence in Germany and Japan (since the end of World War II) and Korea (since 1952). We may actually, never leave, Afghanistan!

Please feel free to disagree with me!!

  10. I personally think that scaling back would be a good choice. I feel this way because if you just get all the soldiers out it would be too much of a dramtic change and I think they have all stayed there too long to just "stay put". I think its dumb of us to be sending thousands of more troops to Afghanistan, its pointless to continue this war.

  11. first i would like to point out that deena c spelled especially wrong. but i think they should stay in iraq i know how much stress it causes families that their relatives is in harms way but they are keeping us safe from any danger that could or would of happened but I do not think that sending more will change anything so keep the ones that are already there.

  12. First i would like to point out that "Chris J." doesn't understand how to use a capital letter, or how to use periods. But i would agree with him on the soldiers staying there. I think it is necessary to keep us safe. On the other hand I do feel sorry that a lot of families have to go through all of the fighting. With that being said I think we should send them home whenever the time feels right.

  13. I think that we should use scaling back, because not only will it save lives but also money. The war has been going on for far to long the reasons for fighting have changed so many times. It is dumb to just keep sending soldiers there!

  14. I think that the choice scaling back would be the best idea for our troop and country. There are so many troops over that don't necessarily need to be. I think that pulling out all at once would be a bad idea because then it looks like we just gave up and gave Afghanistan the win, and definitely sending more is a bad idea in my opinion because its not needed and would just keep costing us more money. I think only good things can come from sending some troops home.

  15. The war in Afghanistan is very important cause we all know someone special in the war. I think that we should start scaling back slowly but not to slow cause, We should show them how we train our troops and police so that they can get an iDea on how to make Sure that their government is ontop of their criminal government. Right now it seems that their police officers arnt where they should be if they were then there wouldnt be as many crimes going on, if we pull out to fast it could show a sign of lack of money, weapons and it may make them think we are weak and they will either attack or they wont be able to take control of their government. If we were to tell them how to run their government they may not froget it but if we showed them and involved them then they would understand and have a better chance of getting on the right track.
